On October 21, 2021, H.E. Khaled Ahmad Zekriya, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Italy, gave a presentation titled “Afghanistan: yesterday, today and tomorrow” at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Bologna. This event, attended by more than 100 participants, was organized to give an overview about the latest upheavals in Afghanistan and its long-term effects on the region and the world. In his presentation, the Ambassador of Afghanistan first briefly discussed the role of Afghanistan in regional and global events over the past three centuries, and subsequently spoke about the current situation in the country, in particular the illegitimate administration of the Taliban in Kabul, and the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Condemnation of Yesterday’s Terrorist Attack at a Mosque in Kandahar, Afghanistan

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Rome strongly condemns the terrorist suicide attack targeting innocent Afghan Shi’ite worshippers attending Friday prayers yesterday in Kandahar. This heinous attack occurred while innocent worshipers had taken refuge in a mosque by praying to Almighty Allah to lessen their pain and miseries of life under the brutal regime of the Taliban in the country. The responsibility of such terror acts lies with those, who have been providing moral and financial support as well as shelters and protection to these terrorist organizations for the past twenty years.
Last week's terrorist attack on Shi’ite’s worshippers in Kunduz and this week's in Kandahar, are clear indication of the Taliban’s failure, contrary to their claims, to provide security for the Afghan citizens.
We express our deepest condolences to the families and relatives of the victims of these brutal terrorist attacks and wish all those injured a speedy recovery.

L'Ambasciata della Repubblica Islamica dell'Afghanistan a Roma accoglie il discorso di ieri di S.E. Mario Draghi, Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri della Repubblica Italiana, nel corso di una conferenza stampa congiunta con S.E. Daniele Franco, ministro dell'Economia e delle Finanze, a tenere il 12 ottobre un vertice virtuale straordinario del G20 per affrontare la crisi in Afghanistan. La ferma presa di posizione del nostro Paese fraterno – la Repubblica Italiana – nel non riconoscere il cosiddetto governo ad interim dei talebani in Afghanistan, con un gabinetto composto da “17 terroristi”, e un direttivo che non è già riuscito a sostenere la loro impegni nel legittimo trasferimento del potere, la formazione di un governo inclusivo, la protezione dei diritti umani - compresi i bambini, le donne e le minoranze - e l'accesso senza ostacoli alle Nazioni Unite e ad altre agenzie per fornire assistenza umanitaria è prezioso e molto apprezzato.
Il governo della Repubblica Islamica dell'Afghanistan attende con impazienza il 12 ottobre il forum straordinario del G20 delle principali economie mondiali, in particolare l'Italia che attualmente detiene la presidenza di turno del G-20, per assistere gentilmente il popolo afghano nelle attuali sfide del terrorismo, siccità, malnutrizione, insicurezza alimentare e sfollamento che il Paese deve affrontare. Il governo sta inoltre cercando il sostegno dei membri del G20, in particolare della Repubblica Italiana, nella formazione di un vero governo provvisorio inclusivo in Afghanistan, che porterà alla creazione di un governo unito e rappresentativo con una partecipazione significativa delle donne e di tutte le altre minoranze etniche.

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Rome welcomes yesterday’s remarks of H.E. Mario Draghi, Prime Minister of the Republic of Italy, during a joint press conference with H.E. Daniele Franco, Minister of Economy and Finance, to hold a G20 extraordinary virtual summit on October 12th, to address the crisis in Afghanistan. The firm stance of our fraternal country – the Republic of Italy – in not recognizing the so-called caretaker government of the Taliban in Afghanistan, with a cabinet that consists of “17 terrorists”, and an executive board that has already failed to uphold their commitments in legitimate transfer of power, forming an inclusive government, protecting human rights – including of children, women, and minorities – and providing unhindered access for the United Nations and other agencies to provide humanitarian assistance, is valuable and highly appreciated.
The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is looking forward to the October 12th G20 extraordinary forum of the world’s major economies, particularly Italy which currently holds the rotating presidency of the G-20, to kindly assist the Afghan people amid the current challenges of terrorism, drought, malnutrition, food insecurity, and displacement the country faces. The government is further seeking the support of the G20 members, especially the Republic of Italy, in forming a true inclusive interim government in Afghanistan, which will lead to the establishment of a government that is united, inclusive, and representative with the full, equal, and meaningful participation of women and all other ethnic minorities.
Once again, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan places great emphasis on the important role of Italy on Afghanistan issues and calls for continued cooperation between the two constitutionally legitimate Republics – Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and Republic of Italy – to realize the common national and international aspiration. At this critical juncture, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan wants to strengthen the common understanding of the situation and the effectiveness of cooperation between the two countries by seeking Italy’s further support and assistance with the people of Afghanistan.
H.E. Ambassador Khaled Ahmad Zekriya paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Theodore Μ. Passas, Ambassador of Greece to Italy. The two talked about the latest situation in Afghanistan, the need to preserve the country's last two decades' democratic achievements and the further enhancement of bilateral ties between Afghanistan and Greece.
Yesterday afternoon, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of H.E. Khaled Ahmad Zekriya met Ambassador Nelli Feroci, President of Istituto Affari Internazionale. The two discussed the current challenges in Afghanistan, particularly the need for humanitarian assistance and the protection of human rights and women' rights, as well as the way forward.
H.E. Khaled Ahmad Zekriya, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Rome - Italy, had an insightful meeting today with H.E. Piero Fassino, President of the Foreign Affairs Committee at the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament. The two discussed humanitarian assistance, protection of Afghanistan’s last two decades' democratic achievements – including human rights, women, girls' and minorities’ rights – and the possible alternatives to the recognition of the Taliban’s so called "interim government".

La posizione di principio del nostro Paese fraterno e amico, la Repubblica Italiana, nel non riconoscere il cosiddetto governo di transizione dei talebani in Afghanistan, con un gabinetto composto da “17 terroristi”, e un direttivo che viola continuamente i diritti umani e i diritti delle donne, è preziosa e molto apprezzata.
Il governo della Repubblica islamica dell'Afghanistan ha sollevato con la comunità internazionale le gravi preoccupazioni del governo e dei cittadini dell'Afghanistan per il rifiuto da parte dei talebani della costituzione democratica del paese e per il loro mancato rispetto dei loro impegni nel legittimo trasferimento di potere, formando un governo, proteggendo i diritti umani - compresi bambini, donne e minoranze - e fornendo accesso senza ostacoli alle Nazioni Unite e ad altre agenzie per fornire assistenza umanitaria nelle attuali sfide di siccità, malnutrizione, insicurezza alimentare e sfollamento che il paese deve affrontare.
